Welcome to Quiet Corner Communications’ Social Summer Series where we bring you the hottest marketing tips for each of the major social media platforms! Today we’re diving into TikTok — which we tend to think of as Florida during Spring Break. It’s filled with young people, and frankly, it’s a little scary.

TikTok has 689 million active users across the globe and in the U.S. 62% of them are between 10 and 29 years old. In other words, if you’re looking to market to youngsters — otherwise known as Gen Z — TikTok is the place to be. But if you’re intimidated by this whippersnapper, we’ve got some tips you can use to make it less scary.

The 3 tips you need to get started on Tik Tok

  1. It’s literally all about video — TikTokkers do not have time for your blog posts or carefully crafted copy. Here it’s all about vertical video! If you can dance you’re ahead of the game because this platform looooves a dance challenge. The truly important thing to know here is that this very young audience is socially savvy and wants authentic content that uses the medium creatively — like these.

  2. Take time to watch and listen — It’s always important to understand your audience and your platform, but that’s especially true on TikTok. Not only is the platform new, but its users are used to seeing the kind of content they love as determined by the algorithm (even more so than on other platforms). The only way to understand how to reach them is to watch, learn, and imitate!

  3. When in doubt, use a hashtag challenge — It’s not just dance challenges that TikTokkers love — they love challenges in general. By issuing a hashtag challenge, brands can get users involved and essentially turn them into brand ambassadors. Partner with a TikTok influencer to get your campaigns off the ground and spread the word to the masses.

*Bonus Tip: If you don’t have the funds to invest in a TikTok challenge of your own, consider joining in on one that’s already trending. Ride the wave!
