Small Biz Spotlight: InsureGood

You already know we love featuring our favorite small businesses on the QCC blog — and today we’re shining the spotlight on InsureGood.

In this installment of our Small Biz Spotlight, founder Meredith Messenger shares how InsureGood got started, how they’ve adjusted during the pandemic, and what her best advice is for new business owners.

Meredith Messenger has worked with hundreds of small businesses for over 15 years, and has seen how the power of community can make the difference between positive change and failure. That’s why Meredith founded InsureGood, a small business dedicated to providing other small businesses with accessible expertise and resources — such as insurance protection, risk management programs, business and growth tools, workshops, and most importantly, a sense of community.

Q: Tell us a little about how you began InsureGood.

A: The mission of InsureGood was developed over several years and is the result of our diverse professional experience. After having worked with many female-led startups and small businesses as a consultant and watching them struggle and sometimes fail, I knew I could use my experience to help more small businesses, and women-led businesses in particular see success by helping them to identify where they needed additional support and protection and providing the access to the tools and resources to help them thrive.

Q: How did the pandemic impact the way you communicate with your customers and clients?

A: We launched our business during the pandemic, so right from the start we've been a digital-first company that offers our client base the opportunity to choose how they would like to communicate with us. I believe that modern consumers expect to have a say in how they interact with brands. They want to have a relationship on their terms. So we ask every client how and when they want to hear from us. Do they prefer text or email and under what circumstances? Would they like to watch a video of their Risk Advisor reviewing their insurance for them or would they like to have a live video call? We also offer a variety of online webinars and seminars to help arm our business owner clients with the tools and resources they need to survive and grow during the pandemic and beyond.

Q: Are there any “pandemic strategies” that you will carry over into the future?

A: In addition to all of the above, we plan to keep our "remote first" workplace strategy. This allows us to control expenses and provide the flexible work environment that attracts and helps to retain top-tier talent.

Q: What is your biggest marketing challenge as a business owner?

A: Executing and managing cost-effective/low budget, marketing strategies while also running and trying to grow a business. Limited budgets mean we have to take on a lot of the responsibilities ourselves and that can be challenging.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for new business owners?

A: Don't compare your business to others that you see — the comparison trap only brings you down. You have no idea how long others have been working at their business or what's going on in the background for them. A close second is the power that networking and collaboration can have on your business. Starting every interaction with the mindset of, "how can I help" will pay tremendous dividends for you.
