Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Quiet Corner Communications

Some of you may be wondering where we got our name — Quiet Corner Communications — so here’s a little story about how we came to be.

Once upon a time, it all started in 2019, a few months after I moved back to Connecticut from Vermont. I found myself living in Woodstock, Connecticut, a small town — at least in terms of population, sometimes it seems like you can drive forever and never actually leave town — in the “quiet corner,” as it’s known. 

I’d been working from home since 2012 as the editor of a small trade magazine that covered the world of digital media and marketing, but lately, I’d been doing more and more freelance work. I was proofreading and editing lots of articles, emails, and reports, but that work soon turned into writing the emails I’d previously been charged with proofing — all with an eye toward increasing open rates and boosting conversions — or turning a client’s article into a post for her website and her LinkedIn profile. And the content ball just kept rolling from there. Soon I was managing client blogs, ghostwriting articles, and proofreading entire magazines.

By the end of 2019 it was becoming clear that I could strike out on my own — leave the safety of my 9-to-5 behind me and take a leap of faith that would allow me even more control over where and how much I work. (I still harbor dreams of living in a van and working from far-flung campsites… but that doesn’t seem likely.) Then, as you all know, COVID-19 hit and while you might think I’d start panicking, it was just the opposite. Nearly all of my clients were in the mobile space, one of the few industries that kept booming in the face of quarantine. 

I’d been hoping, for some time, to branch out beyond my tech clients and help small, local businesses realize their potential with the help of content marketing. By summer, I was writing a proposal for a local architect that included extensive help with social media — so I reached out to my favorite social media master, Rebecca. (She’s not technically a resident of the quiet corner but she does live in another small town, so she’s an honorary resident.) 

Rebecca and I met as guests on The Colin McEnroe Show, a local NPR program, where we’ve ranted about everything from the “Ghostbusters” reboot to “Game of Thrones” (she’s a huge GOT nerd by the way — and she’d be happy to talk to you about it). We’d worked together on podcasts in the past and as the amount of work I had ramped up — and I found myself with writing assignments to dole out — I turned to Rebecca. If there’s one thing I know, it’s that when you’re hiring a writer, quality matters, and I like to work with people I know and trust. And it helps that she’s a social media expert who adds her own independent set of skills to the team — including a history of working with start-ups, local music venues, and community organizations that fit right into our vision for QCC.
